When we last saw the poor snail, Amanda, she was on the edge of total despair about her unrequited love for charismatic Berowne. She has no idea why he will not pay her attention nor agree to meet her. Yet we, fortunately, have privileged insight into the workings of his complex mind and emotions.
| Berowne is analysing his own inmost psychology. |
It's not that Berowne is hard-hearted:
He is passionate - once he gets started,
But Amanda's quite rude,
Sometimes even crude,
And then there's the time that she ...
I do apologise but I failed to find a rhyme for that last line. Perhaps you can fill it in?
| Maybe he got a little too close last time? |
Berowne is elite and refined:
Her flatulence preys on his mind.
Amanda's too keen
On gaseous aubergine.
He must warn her before they have dined.
Another cliff-hanger. How can he word his request? Will her unfortunate habit repel him again and send her back to the brink? Is this what Hamlet meant about the "thousand natural shocks/That flesh is heir to"? Surely not 1000!
